Foum Zguid: the quiet gateway to Erg Chegaga

Foum Zguid village at sunrise against an open desert backdrop

Foum Zguid sits at the southern edge of the Anti-Atlas, where the paved road ends and the pistes begin. There are no big hotels, no tour bus parking, and no souvenir street. There is a weekly market, a few guesthouses, and the beginning of the track to Erg Chegaga.

Why tours start here

Geography. Foum Zguid is the closest village to the Erg Chegaga dunes, about 90 minutes by 4x4 across the dry bed of Lake Iriki. Starting here means more time in the dunes and less time on highways. Our 2-day and wild camping tours both begin and end in the village, and our treks walk out of it.

What to do with an extra hour

Visit the small weekly market if your timing is right, eat a tajine in a local restaurant rather than a tourist one, and watch the light change on the Jbel Bani ridge at sunset. The village is also the last reliable place for cash, phone signal and fuel before the desert.

Getting to Foum Zguid

Most travelers arrive from Marrakech or Agadir by road, roughly 6 to 7 hours with stops. Our Marrakech and Agadir tours include the transfer with cultural stops on the way. If you are self-driving, the road is paved all the way and manageable in any car.
